Aquest lloc encara es coneix amb el top\u00f2nim de Portell el Vell.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La primera not\u00edcia hist\u00f2rica coneguda \u00e9s la reconquesta per Don Blasco, sobre l&#8217;any 1233, passant a les mans del rei Jaume I i del batlle de Morella.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En 1691 el rei Carles II segrega Portell de Morella i eleva la poblaci\u00f3 a la categoria de vila. En 1916 per un decret ministerial es canvia el nom a Portell de Morella, per a evitar confusions amb altres poblacions. El nom acceptat pels habitants continua sent Portell. Nous descobriments i l&#8217;exist\u00e8ncia del poblat musulm\u00e0 de Portell el Vell posen en dubte aquesta q\u00fcesti\u00f3. La carta de poblament concedida per Pere II en 1212 als templers de Cantavieja inclou els territoris actuals de la Mata, la Cuba i Portell fins al Castell musulm\u00e0 de Celuma. En el segle XIII es construeix la potent torre defensiva (actual campanar) pels templers per a controlar el cam\u00ed que comunica amb les terres altes de Terol i defensar la frontera. El nucli defensiu possibilita el desenvolupament del poblat.
